People Make Business

One of the biggest misconceptions of life is to think that if you continuously work hard, you’ll eventually be at the top. If you decided right now to dedicate your life to become the greatest rock climber, business man, artist, or lawyer, do you think you would eventually get there? The answer is “No”. You may learn a lot about it or be better than the next guy, but expecting to be the best is just naive. Sure life is a bunch of little battles but in the end, to be on the VERY top, you have to get lucky, you have to risk, and you have to be willing make the climb to the top. You have to realize that in almost anything, its not what you know or how hard you work, it’s who you know.

These rules apply if you want to be at the top. Its easy to be average or even fairly above average. But getting to the top takes a lot more than hard work.

  • Be willing to risk it all.
  • Sometimes you have to forget about the details… the devil’s in the details.
  • Meet and appreciate everyone… People will always be your biggest assett.
  • Realize that nothing would exist if there wasn’t a person behind the scenes.
  • If you see an opportunity, take it.
  • Everything is a competition. But there can be multiple winners. Bring your friends, if they’ll let you.

So, when you read a motivational book or hear a speach that makes you want to turn your life around, realize that trying hard is just the half of it. Sometimes you’ve got to get lucky.

“Don’t tell me how hard you work. Tell me how much you get done.”

Just like poker …

and I haven’t been getting lucky lately :(

But you one tournaments this weekend!

against a bunch of no-talent ass clowns … for no money … yeah

Well, it’s not about luck in my game.

I used to think that too … until guys kept getting miracle card after miracle card to take me out of the (real money) tournaments I’ve been playing.

But I guess all you can do is put your money in when you have the best of it, right?

I’m talking about having a 90% chance to win after the flop or turn, and getting someone to go all in. Then the one of two cards in the deck hit, and burn me.

Everyone statistically is going to win / lose the same amount – and everyone knows STATISTICS DONT LIE
I kind of disagree though – if you never give up, and you have nice broad goals, you can pretty much make it happen. I mean, if your goal is “I want to be a millionaire” that would be easier than “I want to become a millionaire by selling ice to eskimos” You have just locked yourself into this particular thing which is going to eat your ass 99% of the time – and leave you penniless – but if you’re willing to do anything, and grab any opportunity – you may end up being a porn peddler – but hey, who is the winner? the poor guy who has no money, or the guy who’s a multimillionaire and hangs out with hot naked girls all day? EXACTLY

“Everyone statistically is going to win / lose the same amount – and everyone knows STATISTICS DONT LIE”

I’m going to assume you are talking about poker here …

It is true that everyone will statistically be dealt the same number of good hands and bad hands over a long period of time, but that doesnt necessarily mean they will win or lose the same amount of money. Good players will be able to determine their good hands and make more money off of them, while being able to get rid of bad hands. Poker does have a skill element … try it sometime :)
